Susan Bourgerie Profile

Susan BourgerieChange happens in the here-and-now; in each present moment we have the freedom to see from a new perspective, make different choices, and change our lives. Because I believe this, I work to create a therapy experience that is focused on the present moment as it leads to new possibilities. My style is warm, practical, and engaged; I offer empathic listening, provocative questions, helpful feedback, and support as you take action to create change.

Because I believe positive change is whole person change I will assess and work with you to address issues of physical health and wellness, healthy and balanced lifestyle, meaningful work, and positive relationships with self and others.

I am grounded in traditional, Western therapy models – psychodynamic, cognitive, competency-based, developmental, and family systems therapies. From my study of Buddhist psychology and my personal practice of meditation, I bring mindfulness-based therapies and the Japanese approaches of Naikan and Morita Therapy. I have completed a professional training in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn, and have studied the integration of Eastern and Western approaches with John Welwood, Marsha Linehan, and Tara Brach. I have over twenty years of experience as a psychotherapist, preceded by experience in education, business, and career counseling.

At the core of my work is the practice of mindfulness – moment-to-moment awareness of experience with non-judging attention and radical acceptance – and I commit to giving you this type of attention. Although most of my clients do not have a serious meditation practice, many of them find mindfulness-based approaches to be helpful in understanding and relieving the suffering created by our habitual ways of thinking and acting.

I am a founding partner in Partners in Resilience, and facilitate our 10 week course “Pathways to Resilience”, as well as professional training in the use of the Partners in Resilience integrative model for treatment of anxiety and depression.

I accept a wide variety of types of insurance (out-of-network), and am a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Aware Gold Provider. You may contact me or your insurance company to verify that your policy will cover my services.

I would be happy to talk with you about the possibility of working together! Please feel free to call or send an email.
